Located in the Eastern Goldfields, Kalgoorlie is a Western Australian city located 595 kilometres East-Northeast of Perth. Even though the city of Kalgoorlie is in existence since the Gold Rush, the city in present form was formed by the amalgamation of the Town of Kalgoorlie and the Shire of Boulder in 1989. Kalgoorlie is the fifth-largest city in Western Australia.

Mineralization comprises of more than one thousand gold-sulfide-telluride breccia lodes, that are steeply dipping, with the extent of some lodes exceeding 2 kilometers in length and 1.3 kilometers vertically. High quality ore is concentrated at the converging point of the lodes. Discrete goldfield deposits are many in number with the highly notable ones being the Golden Mile, Mt Charlotte, Mt Percy and Hannan’s North. Around 90% of gold production from the field is attributed to the Golden Mile deposit. The Underground and Open – pit mines in the Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, have produced more than 1,475 metric tons of gold since the discovery in 1893.

Australia’s largest open cut gold mine is the Fimiston Open Pit, which is popularly and commonly referred to as the ‘Super Pit’. Majority of the high quality gold mined in the Super Pit are found in the ore lodes formed by the ancient shears of the Golden Mile Dolerite. Hence the area is known famously across the globe as ‘The Golden Mile’. The golden mile however is 2km wide and 1km deep. The Super Pit has an output of 900,000 ounces of gold every year.

Some of the prominent neighbouring towns are Coolgardie, Kambalda an Norseman. Coolgardie is located about 40 kilometer from Kalgoorlie and is known as the “mother of the Western Australian Goldfields”. Coolgardie was a very famous gold mining site in the 1890s. Alluvial gold was mined at that time period and Coolgardie was the third largest Australian city then. After the the World War I, the gold reserves of Coolgardie has come down significantly and today the town is the historic symbol for Australia as a country and for the mining industry in Australia in general.

Kambadla is located 60 kilometers to the south of Kalgoorlie. It was the home for the short lived Red Hill Gold Mine. The town got back to its mining glory days when the mining industry o Australia discovered Nickel in Kambadla. Kambadla is now home to Australia’s fist ever nickel mine.

Norseman is located 190 kilometers to the south of Kalgoorlie. The scenic beauty of Norseman is very famous and the town is surrounded by numerous granite outcrops and eucalyptus woodlands. Unlike Coolgardie, in Norseman gold is found in the hard quartz reef. Gold mining began with the original Dundas fields in the early 1890s. Norseman was once the second largest gold deposit, next only to Kalgoorlie. The mining industry o Australia has mined around 100 tonnes of Gold from Norseman and the the extraction of the 5 millionth ounce of gold was celebrated in November 2002.
